K, guys. Smash the single, while I'm on drugs. Because I'm (a) bored, (b) ready to do this thing again.
Stay tuned for certain hilarity.
Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye
First of all, what is that band name? Somebody tell me how to pronounce it. Goat-ie? Got-ye? Goit-ie? Does not compute.
Next, what is that title? Studies say it's either a cliche, or a nonsensical phrase, or possibly the name of a spaceship in the year 2548. Or I just made that up.
Okay, let's stop poking fun in the obvious places and start poking fun where it counts.
I don't mind the intro. It's nice. Simple. Wait, what is that? A freaking xylophone? Hilarious! If that isn't tasteful, I don't know what is!
Also, what is the drum doing through this? Oh, yeah, it's impossible to tell because they threw so much reverb on there that you can't hear the actual hit. Classy.
Here's my question: They obviously have somewhat of a groove going on, and it works, it works. So why do they have to go and throw in some random instruments that don't sound like anything at all? Or maybe it sounds like a kazoo mixed with a nose flute blended with a spit-shined guitar. Mm. Yes. I like that. Quirky AND disappointing.
So, I guess this song is just going to play the same two chords this whole time. Oh wait, I spoke too soon, now there's three chords. And the dumb xylophone again. Classy.
Enter female vocalist with highly processed vocals because she obviously couldn't sing on pitch so they auto-tuned it but tried not to make it sound like auto-tune. Maybe I'm being too critical.. I mean, this stream I'm listening to is pretty awful quality. Still. I'm not being to harsh.
It just feels like they're trying to use a uber-simplified blues riff without putting any thought into it and saying, the more dead space and weird noises we have in there, the better! Makes sense to me.
Lyrics fun!
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
Okay, I get it. Cliche's, convincing yourself, makes sense. And then that last line. What? That was love? What? I'm so confused. I thought he was saying it wasn't, but now all the sudden it is? What? What? Am I conveying my confusion? Dumb. It's dumb. That's stupid. Let's do some more lyrics:
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and I feel so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and I feel so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Again, I'm confused. I get the wallowing in self pity, and the pseudo-emo depression stuff. But why does he feel so sorry for himself if he's glad it's over? And then that next verse or chorus or stanza if we want to be so free with our words--what is that? It's just so detached, it doesn't make any sense. Nothing in this song is coherent at all. And I'm not just talking about the lyrics, the music is so contrived and tired that it becomes boring after the intro so they're forced to throw in those hilariously absurd instruments. It's pointless. How is this a hit? There's no message in here at all. It's just a whiny, trite break up song that only makes sense to the people that are so drunk on their own tears--even though they wanted out the whole time--that they can't think straight, let alone be trusted to make important decisions like what music to buy.
Yeah. I don't get this garbage.
This single is smashed.
